Prices in cacao

“It [the cacao tree] has been cultivated in Mexico… for more than two thousand years, and not only as a source of the divine drink — cacao pods served as symbols of fertility, often portrayed in sculptures and carvings, as well as a convenient currency (four cacao beans would buy a rabbit, ten a prostitute, one hundred a slave)” (p. 29).
